Community Concert Association Presents“Vega String Quartet”

Taking its name from the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, the Vega String Quartet burst onto the musical scene in 1991, capturing the Young Artists Prize at the International Munich Competition in its first year of existence. Made up of four energetic, Chinese-born, Juilliard and Manhattan School-trained musicians, the Vega Quartet counts among its other musical triumphs four Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition awards, and top prizes at the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, the Carmel Chamber Music Competition, and the National Society of Arts and Letters String Quartet Competition.

The Gold Medal winner of the Enmark American Traditions Competition, has been hailed by critics for his “rich luxuriant tone”, “energetic performances”, and “convincing stage presence”. He is highly regarded for his “moving” and “authentic” interpretations of African American spirituals and has given recitals of spirituals throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Mr. Sims has performed these concerts at the Smithsonian Institute, the Los Angeles African-American Museum, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, the Chicago Historical Society, and at many colleges and universities throughout the United States.

MS JAMS (Just About Multiple Sclerosis) is a night of music and information featuring live musical performances from the world of Jazz, Reggae, Rhythm and Blues, as well as personal and professional insights into the affects of Multiple Sclerosis. Headlining the evening’s musical menu will be performances by Roots Rock Society, the Darius Pimpleton Project and the Mona Shores Jazz Ensemble. Proceeds from the event provide funds to improve outreach programs to those affected by MS and other disabling conditions in West Michigan. Informational booths and a silent auction will be held in the Frauenthal Lobby from 6:00pm to 9:45pm

It’s casual night as the Symphony musicians don their denim for works with an Eastern flavor, including Beethoven’s Overture to The Ruins of Athens, Adams’ The Chairman Dances, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man performs Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun’s Concerto for Pipa and String Orchestra.

The classic musical is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. It chronicles the life of Rose, an overbearing stage mother determined to break into the big time by pushing the vaudeville career of her younger daughter, June, and the subsequent rise of Louise as the first “lady” of burlesque.

Pianist Alpin Hong, First Prize Winner of the 2001 Concert Artists Guild International Competition as well as winner of the 1989 Stravinsky Piano Competition while still a teenager, thrills audiences with his incredible virtuosity. A graduate of Julliard, his performance credits are astounding for one barely in his twenties. In addition Alpin Hong is a martial arts champion, an avid skateboarder and accomplished actor.
